Finding pay; commuting; and community solutions

News

CLS President, Patricia Smitherman, attended “Finding Solutions: Latinos & the Socio-Economic Development of the Southeast” recently at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education (UGA). There were many ideas and issues that were pertinent for the readers of this newsletter that will be shared in future editions. The following is a solution to check cashing issues.

A South Carolina poultry company issues ATM cards that Latino employees use not only to get their weekly pay but also to send to families back in their home country. It eliminates the rush on banks, paying money transfer fees and theft.

Tips
Getting to work is so important to a Latino worker that he or she will risk almost anything to get there – like driving without a license or insurance. Why not work on solutions with your employees and the community to help them arrive safely, not endangering themselves or others?

Help
If your employees live near Gainesville, Georgia, please let them know about the event “Hands Across the Border,” a family event, to be held at the Georgia Mountain Center, Saturday, June 18, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

There will be FREE health screenings; information on immigration, getting a GED, and how to purchase a home; and, how to get help from charity organizations. All this and more! Sponsored by the citizens of Gainesville.
